Impressions
Impressions refer to the total number of times content is displayed to users. Unlike reach, impressions count every view, including repeated views by the same person.
How it works
Each time a post appears on a screen — in a feed, story, or search result — it generates an impression. If the same user sees the post multiple times, each appearance is counted separately.
Impressions measure visibility, not unique viewers.
Impressions vs reach
These two metrics are closely related but different:
- Impressions show how often content is shown
- Reach shows how many unique users see it
High impressions with low reach mean the same users are seeing the content repeatedly.
What affects impressions
Impressions depend on:
how often content is shown
user scrolling behavior
- algorithm distribution
- reposts or shares
More exposure leads to more impressions.
Why impressions matter
Impressions help understand:
- content visibility frequency
- how aggressively content is promoted
- audience exposure levels
They are often used in analytics and advertising.
Simple example
Impressions are like counting how many times a billboard appears in your view while driving past it multiple times.
